Infernal Affairs (2002)

A story between a mole in the police department and an undercover cop. Their objectives are the same: to find out who is the mole, and who is the cop.

***

If that description at the top sounds familiar, it’s because this movies was remade by Martin Scorsese as The Departed.

The idea is simple and straightforward. A cop is actually a gangster, and a gangster is secretly a cop. And the movie does not require much beyond the ramifications of this initial situation. As the story progresses, the two characters find it increasingly difficult to maintain their covers. Then, at a certain point, the have spent so much time pretending to be someone they’re not that the masks have become their reality.

The movie unfolds like a game of chess in which you don’t know the colors of the pieces. Quite interesting.
