The Artist

“No one has ever written, painted, sculpted, modeled, built, or invented except literally to get out of hell.”

Antonin Artaud

Imagine staring yourself in the mirror. Maybe you like what you see, maybe we don’t. But what you’ll notice if you do this on a regular basis is the irreversible process of aging. Life slowly moving closer towards death. The apparent opposite. The yin to the yang. The omega to the alpha.

The idea is that we are frightened animals because of this. And everything revolves around this realization. Everything is born out of our fear of death. From society to religion to art. Our addictions, our obsessions, our personalities. Fame and glory. Money.

When desperately wish death would not be the end.

Some of you might think it is a cynical view of things. Maybe it is. Maybe it is just the way things are.

Regardless, the artist creates. The artist will always create, for it is in his nature to do so, for it is his best coping mechanism. It is his only way of announcing the darkness that he will be remembered.

  1. An interesting perspective on the artist although I don’t altogether agree that the artist creates to tell the fear and darkness that he/she will be remembered. Not all of us are that self-centered. We create for many different reasons (to bring joy to those who take a chance on us, to communicate with an outside world, to make sense of the chaos that is around us, to exorcise our demons), usually a combination of reasons and some that we don’t even know about or realize.
